Energy drinks are a very popular fad and are growing in numbers and products throughout the world today. People use them because they promise more energy and are perceived as healthy drinks. But the question is, are they really good for you or are they hiding something? Let’s take a more in-depth look at what is in most of these energy drinks to really get a good idea of what you’re putting in your body.
A good majority of energy drinks on the market today come loaded with high fructose corn syrup. What is high fructose corn syrup? It’s the same ingredient that you will find in most sodas and cans of pop today. It’s basically a generic form of sugar that gives you an immediate rush of energy but can also pack on pounds and make your belly bigger.
The ones that do not have high fructose corn syrup in their ingredients will include some type of artificial sweetener which may even be worse than sugar itself. These artificial sweeteners will trick your body into thinking its getting calories when it’s really not. What this does is only makes you hungrier and will increase your appetite, especially if you drink a lot of these sweeteners.
One of the main ingredients in these energy drinks is caffeine. Caffeine can help you feel more alert and active when you’re tired but there are healthier alternatives in places you can get your caffeine intake instead. For example, certain teas and coffees include plenty of antioxidants that these energy drinks just do not have.
Most people think the energy drinks are healthy because they advertise the taurine and other vitamins. The thing that most people don’t realize is that taurine comes in just about all protein sources. And when you drink vitamins in a beverage they are more than likely to come right out of your body next time you go to the bathroom. You’re better off getting these vitamins from your meals you consume during the day as they will stay in your system and be used as they were meant to be used.
So the truth is that energy drinks are nothing more than a gimmick to give you an immediate rush of energy and a heightened state of awareness. Once these energy drinks wear out, your body will feel worn out as well. They are not going to make you a better athlete and they are not going to make you any healthier. In fact, using them too often will do just the opposite.
